What is Celiac Disease? Firstly let us understand what is Gluten? Gluten is a protein found in rye, barley or wheat. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. ▪ The celiac condition is the one where gluten consumption may cause damage to the small intestine ▪ The reaction caused against gluten causes inflammation of the small intestine. The damage caused to the small intestine also lead to nutritional deficiencies as it affects the absorption of nutrition from the ingested foods.

Indians Suffer from Celiac Disease ▪ According to experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, celiac disease affects close to six to eight million people in India. ▪ The prevalence rate of celiac disease(including India) is understood to be 1% globally. ▪ In India, celiac disease is suspected to be more prevalent in north India population, where wheat is primarily grown and forms the staple cereal. ▪ The prevalence of celiac disease has been doubling every 20 years. ▪ The diagnosis rate of celiac disease is extremely low presently only about 5%. which means out of 100 people affected with celiac disease, 95 are not aware of this condition. Care for Celiac Disease Celiac patients need to take special care while planning their diet. ▪ They should carefully read the labels of all the products. ▪ They should only buy products which are Gluten free. ▪ They should avoid eating grains, pasta, cereals, and processed foods as these may contain gluten-containing grains like rye, barley or wheat ▪ They should keep a list of natural gluten-free products handy with them. ▪ They should know the gluten-free foodstuffs that they can consume in their daily diet.

Gluten Free Diet ▪ Celiac disease patients require making dietary changes in order to curb the problems caused by gluten-containing products. ▪ Patients with celiac disease should avoid Gluten and Gluten containing products in their diet. ▪ Gluten-free diet for celiac disease patients will help in reducing the symptoms, heal the injury and prevent further damage. ▪ The slightest amount of Gluten in the diet may trigger the immune response and cause severe health problems and complications in the patients.

Gluten Free Food Products ▪ Many healthy gluten-free products are now available in the market. Gluten Free Jowar (Sorghum) Flakes and Pearl Millet (Bajra) Flakes are amongst them. The advantages of including these flakes in the celiac patient’s diet are – ▪ These are produced from natural grains and by natural farming techniques ▪ The necessary nutritional ingredients are intact ▪ They are a rich source of dietary fibre and low in sugar content ▪ They help in digestion and reduce post-meal acidity ▪ They reduce the complications caused by celiac patients
