1 Acadia’s Dark History Weeding or as we secretly refer to it: Maintenance! We are not great weeders (think an episode of hoarders) Infamous “dotting” project – late 90s, early 2000s Prior to that: the more infamous booksale (prior 1997) Withdrawal: cleverly not called “weeding” in the Maintenance section of the Collection Development Policy Withdrawal is defined as the removal of materials from the collections and is a carefully planned, ongoing process that is developed and implemented in partnership with professors to ensure that the integrity of the collections is maintained. Lack of space is not considered a legitimate reason for withdrawing materials from the collection. The number of times that an item in the collection has or has not been signed out is also not considered a legitimate measure when considering withdrawal. The definition of withdrawal does not include the removal of duplicate copies as long as one copy of a work remains in the collection, since the intellectual content of the collection does not change. (Different editions of a work are not considered to be duplicates.)
