TASK: Create a flow diagram as to how Henry was able to eventually gain a divorce using the information provided. The last 2 paragraphs on page 70 talk about how Henry changed from a vague to an official policy. Read through those paragraphs again and write down the different arguments about why this was the case. Which one are you more convinced by and why? 5 The Role of Cromwell TASK: As we watch the following clip, I would like you to document the role of Cromwell in helping to secure the divorce by answering the following questions: 18.51 How did Henry and Cromwell try to progress the case for divorce? What is the difference between a king and an emperor? How far was Henry’s new argument a matter of religion? What was Parliament’s traditional role? How did Cromwell seek to expand Parliaments role? Why was Parliament important for this? What were the long term consequences of Cromwell’s use of Parliament? 24: What were Cromwell’s motivations for helping to obtain a divorce? 6 Establishment of Royal Supremacy: Henrician Reformation
By the end of 1534, Henry (with the help of Thomas Cromwell) passed a series of Acts of Parliament defining the nature and organisation of the Church in England. These laws systematically stripped away the pope’s control and transferred power in the key areas to the King. This was the Henrician Reformation as far as Henry was concerned – a political reformation over who controlled the Church. TASK: Using the timeline you have been given, highlight key turning points in Henry achieving a) his divorce and b) the Break with Rome (use different colours) Create a revision diagram, different to the one on page 74, which explains how the break with Rome affected henry VIII’s powers as King and the implications it had (use the information on page 75 to help with this). Develop the diagram further to show how the power of the crown increased further as a consequence of this. Use the information on page 89 – 90 to help. Which act do you think was the most important in the break from Rome? Explain your answer. How was Henry able to get his divorce from Catherine? Now that we have at what happened, it is now time to think about who was responsible.
