1 Disinfection and Sterilization

2 METHODS OF STERILISATION
There is a range of methods for cleaning equipment Decontamination through disinfection to sterilisation. Decontamination is the physical removal of infected material by washing or scrubbing Disinfection is the killing of non sporing organisms Sterilisation is the killing of all micro organisms including viruses, fungi and spores. Increasingly filtration is used as a method of controlling transfer of infected material, for example the protection of ventilators.

3 Methods of Disinfection
1. Pasteurisation 20 minutes at 70°C or 10 minutes at 80°C or 5 minutes at 100°C 2. Chemical formaldehyde or 70% alcohol or %chlorhexidine or 2% gluteraldehyde or 10% hypochlorite solution or hydrogen peroxide or phenol

4 Methods of Sterilisation
Dry heat 150°C for 30 minutes Moist heat (steam under pressure-autoclaving) 30 minutes at 1 atmosphere 122°C or 10 minutes at 1.5 atmospheres 126°C or 3 minutes at 2 atmospheres 134°C Ethylene oxide Gamma irradiation

5 The various labels which are used in medical products after sterilisation..
