Summary of Results Study Period 2005-2008 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against electromagnetic environment effects in telecommunications Roberto Pomponi

International Telecommunication Union 2 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Contents Terms of reference Highlights of achievements Future work Supplemental slides

International Telecommunication Union 3 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Terms of Reference SG 5 is responsible for studies related to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of telecommunication systems including to avoid hazard to human beings Lead SG for: – Area 0 Generic, Domain 15 ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Protection and Safety

International Telecommunication Union 4 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Highlights of achievements (I) SG 5s leadership on the management of electro-magnetic interference to telecommunication systems from power systems has been consolidated by: – New Recs. K.54 and K.68 – Revision of Volume V and VI of the Directives Protection of telecommunication lines against harmful effects from electric power and electrified railway lines

International Telecommunication Union 5 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Highlights of achievements (II) SG 5s leadership on the standardization of equipment resistibility has been consolidated by : – Revision of Recs. K.20, K.21, K.44 and K.45 as well on lightning protection of telecommunication systems by : – New Recs. K.67, K.71 and K.72 – Revision of Recs. K.46 and K.47

International Telecommunication Union 6 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Highlights of achievements (III) In the field of human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs): – New Rec. K.70, together with associated EMF estimator software, gives guidance on mitigation methods for reducing the radiation level from radio-communication installations in order to comply with exposure limits – Recs. K.52 and K.61 on EMFs calculation and measurement methods have been revised

International Telecommunication Union 7 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Highlights of achievements (IV) In the Home Network field: – The new Rec. K.74 provides EMC, Resistibility and Safety requirements for home network devices that mainly have the function of telecommunication – In the new Rec. K.75, Manufacturers, Network Operators and Test Houses can find classification of telecommunication equipment interfaces for the application of standards on resistibility and safety

International Telecommunication Union 8 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Highlights of achievements (V) Protective Components characteristics are given in the new Recs. K.65 and K.69 and revision of Recs. K.12 and K.30 The new Recs. K.66 and K.73 are in the field of Earthing and Bonding, whereas the new Rec. K.76 and the revision of the Rec. K.48 are in the EMC field The deployment of broadband services has increased the risk of interference of wire-line telecommunication networks with radio services. The revision of Rec. K.60 deals with the management of this risk

International Telecommunication Union 9 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Future Work (I) Continuation of Questions dealing with: – Home Network – Security of telecommunication and information systems regarding electromagnetic environment – EMC requirements for Information Society – Interference on telecommunication systems from power systems – Resistibility and Safety requirements

International Telecommunication Union 10 ITU-T Study Group 5 Protection against e.m. effects in tlc Future Work (II) Continuation of Questions dealing with: – Lightning protection of telecommunication installations – Human Exposure to Electromagnetic fields from telecommunication installations – Earthing and Bonding techniques – EMC requirements for telecommunication equipment
