1. Twain is satirizing the lynch mob in Ch. 21 and 22. In what way can the individuals in a mob be seen as cowards? Discuss the psychology of a lynch mob. Why is Sherburn successful in breaking up the mob? What is his tone? Cite examples from the novel to support your argument.
2. In Ch. 22, how do the duke and king entice people to see the “Royal Nonesuch”? What tone do they use? What do you think Twain is implying about human nature with this?
