1 Ordered Sharing At each table, Discuss the brief poem in front of you. Discuss what the poem is about and be ready to explain whether this is an example of (extended) metaphor or symbolism. Then, discuss how the note card that will be provided to you is representative of the image the poet expresses.

2 Socratic Circle As a class, analyze the poem, “Tony Steinberg: Brave seventh grade Viking warrior” more closely. The first group’s job is to answer the following: How does the work make you feel? How does it make you feel? (what emotions result from your empathy?) (What devices does the author use to make you feel it?)

3 Socratic Circle The Second group’s job includes the following:
Clarify and confirm the first group’s findings. How does it make you feel?: Mali repeats his metaphor over and over. Why does he do this? What makes this repetition particularly effective? How does it make you feel?: ere are clear examples of symbolism in the poem. Identify and attempt to explain how they’re symbolic. How does it make you feel?: does the metaphor or the symbolism make you empathize with tony Steinberg more?
