2. A. Trade was one of England’s main reasons for founding their American colonies. B. Because England wanted to be self sufficient, Parliament passed the Navigation Acts in 1651.

3. The Navigation Acts… 1. Placed duties (taxes) on many goods 2. Said most goods could only be sold to England. I’m glad I’m not a Colony!

4. C. England claimed the Navigation Acts were good for the colonies D. Many colonists disagreed. They felt they should be able to sell goods to whomever they wanted.

5. F. Unfortunately, demand for goods in the colonies was small compared to that of foreign countries. G. This led to an unfavorable balance of trade within the colonies. ENGLAND COLONY I’m not sure I am going to like what's about to happen

6. Triangular Trade A. Despite colonial complaints, trade restrictions continued into the 1700’s. B. In 1733, England passed the Molasses Act, which placed duties (taxes) on sugar, molasses, and rum.

7. C. In response, colonists began to bring these goods into their colony illegally (smuggling).

8. Rum to England & Africa D. This trade route between the American colonies, Great Britain, and the West Indies was a triangle and became known as Triangular Trade. Slaves to the colonies

9. The Middle Passage Transatlantic Slave Trade A. One leg of Triangular Trade had a great effect on human life.

10. B. It started in the British West Indies. It began with New England traders exchanging rum for slaves on the West African coast. Then brought them back to sell in the American colonies

11. C. The slave trade brought about 10 million Africans across the Atlantic Ocean.

12. D. This horrible and often deadly voyage was called the Middle Passage voyage was called the Middle Passage.

13. E. The journey could often last as long as three months, with Africans chained by their necks and legs. They lived in the space between the upper and lower decks of the ship, crammed in a very small space in order to get as many people on board the ship as possible.

16. F. The Quakers were the first group to protest against slavery. However, the slave trade continued in all the colonies, particularly the southern colonies. G.Slave labor was important in the southern colonies because tobacco and rice production required many workers. H. The slave trade also brought profits to shipbuilders in New England who benefited from building the slave ships.
