Giving

2 Our Best in Worship As in every aspect of our lives as Christians, God deserves our best efforts in our worship to Him This includes our attitude Every act of worship must be done “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24) Last week we addressed the Lord’s Supper Today we address our giving

3 Giving How is giving an act of worship?
Worship is hallowing God as we render acts devoted to Him. Worship is a sacrificial act – Heb. 13:15-16 A sacrifice is giving something to God. Sacrifices have always been a part of worship to God – Genesis 4, Numbers 18:11 Philippians 4:18

4 Giving Partaking “in truth”
1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Authority for a collection and a treasury, “storing up”, “no collections” Commanded – “So you MUST DO” Directions on HOW and WHEN a collection is taken – “On the first day of the week”

5 Funds – free will offering, not compulsory

1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Funds received must be for purposes authorized – evangelism and limited benevolence Let us respect God’s boundaries – 1 Cor. 4:6 Let us not confuse the responsibilities of individuals with collective action

Giving is a unique act, the depth of our giving depends upon our attitude Churches of the first century demonstrated genuine care, even sacrificing 2 Corinthians 8:1-5 – Macedonia, they first gave themselves to the Lord.

11 Giving Preparing our minds Consider what God has given us! We can never out give God! Learn that there are blessings in giving (not the “health and wealth gospel”) – 2 Cor. 9:8-11, Acts 20:35 1 Timothy 6:17-19

12 Giving Preparing our minds Consider the church and her needs Learn contentment – 1 Timothy 6:6 (Matthew 6:24) Don’t limit your giving to the Sunday contribution!

13 Giving What kind of giver are you? The rich fool? Luke 12:16-21 He had much, but gave little The one talent servant? Matthew 25:14-15, He had little, but gave little

14 Giving What kind of giver are you? The poor widow? Luke 21:1-4 She had little, but gave much Abraham? Genesis 13:2, Hebrews 11:8-10, He had much, and gave much 1 Corinthians 4:2, stewards must be found faithful! Luke 17:10, we have done our duty

15 Giving “But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also.” 2 Corinthians 8:7

16 Are we giving God our very best as we worship Him?
