Worshipping God As Individuals

Worship and Service Is everything we do worship? NO! Worship is an attitude of humility which responds as directed to the one we are worshipping We enter into worship

Worship and Service προσκυνεω (proskuneo) John 4:24 1 Cor. 14:25 Heb. 1:6, 11:21

Worship and Service λατρευω (letreuo) A word that primarily means to serve, including carrying out religious duties out of loyalty Worship - Phil 3:3, Heb. 10:2 Serve - Romans 1:9, Heb. 8:4-5, Heb. 9:14, 2 Tim. 1:3 We are servants – Rom. 6:18, 1 Pet. 2:16 (δουλος, doulos)

Worship and Service Worship is about praising God while service is about obeying God (both with honor)

Worship and Service Romans 12:1, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” (NKJV)

Worship and Service Romans 12:1, “…a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” (NASB95) “…as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (ESV)

Worship and Service Romans 12:1 – While sacrifice can be an act of worship, the point of this text is that in all things we SERVE God! Colossians 3:17 – do all in the name of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 10:31 – do all to the glory of God This is NOT worship as Jesus taught in John 4:24

Worship and Service Why the concern? Calling everything worship tends to make it more casual Formal worship is less necessary Advocates of this teach spontaneous worship, emotional worship, and all inclusive (even women can lead, etc.)

Worship and Service We ENTER into worship (proskuneo) – Even as individuals Matthew 2:2, 11 John 9:38 Genesis 22:3-8 2 Samuel 12:20 - David

Worshiping God Individually We can and should worship God more often than when we assemble Acts 16:25 – Paul and Silas at midnight Heb. 13:15 – offer continually…

Worshiping God Individually We can pray! James 5:16 1 Thess. 5:17 Ephesians 6:17-18 Hebrew 4:16 Jesus continually prayed – Matt. 14:23, Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16

Worshiping God Individually We can study! Psalm 1:1-2 Psalm 119:11 2 Timothy 2:15 James 1:22-25 Parents to teach their children the word of God – Deut. 6:6-9

Worshiping God Individually We can meditate! Not Eastern religious thought, but contemplating God’s word! Philippians 4:8 Psalm 119:15, 148 Romans 12:1-2, renewing the mind

Worshiping God Individually We can evangelize! Evangelism often involves prayer and Bible study

Worshiping God Individually We can fast Fasting means to go without something for a specified period of time Matt. 6:16-18 1 Corinthians 7:5 Fasting is not compulsory, it can be done for proper reasons.

Worshiping God Individually We can sing Singing is not limited to the worship assembly James 6:13 Acts 16:25

Some worship is reserved for public assembly Some acts can be done corporately and individually (though there is a distinction in how it is done) – BUT:

Some worship is reserved for public assembly The Lord’s Supper is exclusive to when we are assembled. Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 11:20ff NOT to be done while away from the assembly. Giving – 1 Cor. 16:2, personal and private giving does NOT excuse us from our responsibility to the Lord’s church.

We worship God when we assemble. We should also worship Him personally. Do you?
