Step 1: mark your first term on the number line Step 2: Move the number of spaces in the appropriate direction of the second term positive move UP or to the RIGHT negative move DOWN or the LEFT Step 3: where you end is the sum- put an arrow DO THE SAME THING! WATCH YOUR SIGNS

4 Counters Remember that a yellow counter represents a +1
Remember that a red counter represents a -1 Model 3+ (-2) start with 3 positive counters to represent 3 Add 2 negative counters to represent -2 Form zero pairs= the value of a zero pair is 0 and is formed by 1 yellow and 1 red counter We have 2 zero pairs so we are left with 1 positive counter so 3 + (-2) = 1
