8 Provide explanations for events in the natural world
What is SCIENCE ? SCIENCE is an organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world. GOALS OF SCIENCE Provide explanations for events in the natural world Use those explanations to understand patterns in nature and to make useful predictions about natural events

9 This year, we will be studying BIOLOGY
“Bio” = Latin, meaning LIFE “ology” = Meaning THE STUDY OF BIOLOGY = THE STUDY OF LIFE

10 OBSERVATION and INFERENCE
NOTES Observation: Noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way Measurements are forms of observation Observations can be gathered with your 5 senses (not just sight!) First step of the scientific method

11 OBSERVATION and INFERENCE
Inference: Conclusion or interpretation based on your observations

12 Beginning Activity – Using the pictures, fill out the data table on your notes sheet

13 Beginning Activity – Using the pictures, fill out the data table on your notes sheet

14 Beginning Activity – Using the pictures, fill out the data table on your notes sheet

15 Observation and Inference
Continue Observation/Inference Lab Submit to be graded!

16 Scientific Method – The of science
STEP 1 – OBSERVING AND ASKING QUESTIONS OBSERVATION: Noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way OBSERVATION ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND US!

17 SCIENTIFIC METHOD STEP 2 – INFERRING AND FORMING A HYPOTHESIS
INFERENCE: Logical interpretation based on what scientists already know Inference Hypothesis HYPOTHESIS : A scientific explaination for a set of observations that can be tested in ways that support or reject it

18 SCIENTIFIC METHOD – THE HEART OF SCIENCE
Step 3: DESIGNING A CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT Testing a hypothesis where only ONE variable is changed

19 Variables Independent Variable (Manipulated Variable) : The variable that YOU are CHANGING Dependent Variable (Responding Variable) : The variable that is observed and changes in response to the independent variable

20 Try Some! – Identify the Independent and Dependent Variable
1.) Will Miracle Grow really make my plants grow taller? 2.) Will my test grades increase if I study an additional 20 minutes everyday?

21 Control and Experimental Groups
Typically, an experiment is divided into control and experimental groups Control Group: Exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group EXCEPT for the independent variable What would our control groups be for our problems??? 1.) Will Miracle Grow really make my planets grow taller? 2.) Will my test grades increase if I study an additional 20 minutes everyday?

22 SCIENTIFIC METHOD – THE HEART OF SCIENCE
Step 4: COLLECTING AND ANALYZING DATA DATA: Detailed records of observations and information gathered during an experiment Typically organized in a data table What makes this data table easy to read, understand, and analyze??

23 Scientific Method Step 5 – Drawing Conclusions
Scientists use the experimental data as evidence to support, refute, or revise the hypothesis being tested Step 6 – Repeat experiment for accuracy – WHY??

24 Scientific Theory Scientific Theory – A well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations and hypotheses, and that enables scientists to make accurate predictions about new situations
