2 Measures volume in liters (or milliliters)
Graduated Cylinder Measures volume in liters (or milliliters) - Come in different sizes for different measurements. - Small ones measure small volumes, big ones measure big volumes! How do we use it…..? Let's See!

3 Reading the Graduated Cylinder
Liquids in glass and some plastic containers curve at the edges Changing the diameter of the cylinder will change the shape of the curve This curve is called the MENISCUS

Your eye should be level with the top of the liquid You should read to the bottom of the MENISCUS

What is this reading? 18.0 ml

10 Water Displacement Used to find the volume of an irregularly shaped object.

11 The general idea: When an object is placed in water it will “push” water out of the way. The amount of water moved is equal to the amount of space the object takes up

12 So….. We can use this to find out the volume of things that have odd shapes that we cannot measure. Like:

13 The Steps: 1. Record the level of water in the graduated cylinder
Remember there needs to be enough to cover whatever object you are measuring! 2. Place the object in the cylinder and record the new volume 3. Subtract the old volume from the new volume to find the volume of your object.

14 Can use an overflow container
These work the same as before. Now we just record how much water is actually pushed out of the container!

16 A note about volume If you want to know the volume of a REGULAR shaped object, use L x W x H If you want to know the volume of an IRREGULAR shaped object, use water displacement
