1 Comparing and analyzing trends within research topics

2 Session 5: Comparing and analyzing trends
Where can I find information on trends within competencies? What can be said about sustainability of competencies Which research areas demonstrate an interesting growth pattern? What can be said about my institution’s influence in these areas of interest? Users of SciVal Spotlight 2

3 Which areas demonstrate interesting growth?
Horizontal line: All competencies above horizontal line demonstrate above average growth rate. Don’t only look into growing share. Declining share could also be interesting, since your institution might influence it! Matrix view: filter on growth field / growth share / select subject area (infectious diseases) Explain why growing field is not always above the horizontal line. Horizontal line means above or below average growth rate across all your competencies Explain vertical line Explain field growth over last 5 years. Stable and big likely to be there for long time Explain not only look into growing share. Declining could be interesting as well, since you could be able to turn it into growth again

4 Which areas demonstrate interesting growth?
Horizontal line: All competencies above horizontal line demonstrate above average growth rate. Don’t only look into growing share. Declining share could also be interesting, since your institution might influence it! Table view For selecting competencies on size of field and significant share of articles Downloadable excel: for filtering on significant growth rates

5 Which areas demonstrate interesting growth?
Use the circle map view if degree of multidisciplinarity is important for competency selection Circle view For selecting competencies on multidisciplinarity

6 Examine the summary page for quick glance
Use the competency details summary view for quick glance: What can be said about size and growth rate of field? Your country’s position and your position? Can you keep up? Are you moving this field forward? Etc..

7 What can be said about history and future of the competency?
If competency has a substantial and stable publication rate over time it has most likely existed for more than 5 years and will most likely continue to exist in the nearby future as well Select U of Geneva > DC21

8 Which institutions do you need to monitor closely?
Use the competency details trend view for more detailed analysis of contribution within the 5 years: Do you demonstrate a promising growth rate? Who is jeopardizing your position worldwide and in your country? Or: who would be good collaboration partners? In this example nobody if getting really closer to you

9 Examine the trends more in detail: publications
Also, don’t forget to look into the citation patterns In this example the 2009 articles from U of Geneva demonstrate an interesting spike! What can be said about these articles? Apparently the peer authors from other institutions highly appreciate them...

10 Examine the trends more in detail: citations
If you want to examine the growth rate of an individual institution or author’s contribution, you can view this in SciVerse Scopus Show contribution of author + institution lookup in Scopus (select UvA from not yet collaborative institutions – author: De Rooij)

11 Hands-on Session Take a deeper look to understand a specific research topic Gain at-a-glance understanding from the summary page What is your overall performance relative to the world? See more in detail; about your authors, keywords, journals, and dicsiplines What are the trends? Global, regional, and institutional trends Publication and Citation trends Who are the contributing authors? Check keywords of authors to find out the focus of their research Compare your performance against specific institution? Check the outputs Compare keywords and see how their research focus differs from yours
