4 Who can remember what the following words mean?
Prejudice Prejudice is when you pre-judge someone or a group of people. Discrimination Discrimination is when you act on a prejudice. It’s treating someone or a group of people in a different way because of who they are.

5 Is it ever right to discriminate?
Positive discrimination is the process of giving preferential treatment, especially in employment, to minority groups of society that have been prejudiced against in the past The picture on the right is of Tower Hamlets MP Rusanara Ali. Should there be more positive discrimination to get more women or people from ethnic minorities into parliament? You can have a discussion here about positive discrimination. Is it ever actually good or is it always problematic discriminating?

6 By law you can be any religion you like, you can change faith, or you can be agnostic or atheist. It’s against the law to treat people differently because of their beliefs.

7 Marvel has changed some of it’s best known superheroes to promote diversity.
Captain America is now black Thor is now a woman

8 Ms Marvel is an American Muslim superhero
From the Guardian article: The speed of change has surprised even the writers. Wilson, who is a Muslim convert, remembers when Marvel editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker approached her to write Ms Marvel. “[They said: ‘We want to create a new teenage female American Muslim superhero and put her on her own book.’] I thought, ‘You’re insane. You’ll need to hire an intern just to open the hate mail.’ So when, all of a sudden, everybody was talking about it, I was stunned. I believe that if we’d tried to do the exact same book even five years ago the response would have been very different. It’s coming at a very particular time in the history of American comics.”

9 What things do superheroes need?
A badge or symbol A costume A Power Get students to think about what they think is the biggest problem in our society regarding discrimination. They can then design a superhero who will fight against this. A name Design a superhero who would fight discrimination. Think about what we’ve studied over these lessons.
