1 Research and Regulatory Update
Dan Legard – Director of Research California Strawberry Commission

2 New Strategic Plan Focus on the grower with the consumer in mind
Emphasize employee/grower education & training programs Food Safety Lygus management Focus on innovation Substrate production (RaBeT system) Robotic harvesting Automatic de-capping machine

3 Emphasize Employee/Grower Education & Training Programs

4 Food Safety Training Program
Food Safety Update for Supervisors Food Safety Documentation and Recordkeeping Currently offered New for To be developed Basic Track Food Safety for the Harvest of Processing Berries Introduction to Food Safety for Field Supervisors Teaching Food Safety Advanced Food Safety for Strawberry Harvest Certificate Advanced Track

5 Lygus Management Project
OVERVIEW 32 fields in Watsonville/Salinas/Santa Maria Phase I- Monitoring and degree day model Calculated degree days to time the application of Rimon to catch the first hatch of nymphs within growers fields Had mixed results Phase II – Resistance Bioassay Evaluated resistance of field populations to different classes of insecticides OP, Neonicotinoid, Pyrethroid Growers used this to modify their spray program

6 Focus on Innovation

7 4-Row RaBeT system

8 Santa Maria RaBeT Trial

9 RaBeT Grower Trials (2011-12)
Evaluating substrate production in growers fields 5 locations 1 acre blocks of substrate ½ acre peat, ½ acre peat/coir, ½ acre grower standard Substrate is expensive 4 row system = $14,000-$15,000 per acre 2 row system = $9,000 - $9,500 per acre Research trials (MBA) will focus on reducing costs Amended soil Reuse substrate for 2 or 3 years Recirculate nutrients

10 Robotic Harvester (Spain)

11 Robotic Harvester

12 Automated Calyx Removal

13 Methyl Bromide CUE CA strawberry has been awarded:
3.19 million lbs in 2005 1.65 million lbs for 2011 1.48 million lbs for 2012 1.02 million lbs for 2013 (MBTOC recommendation)

14 US MB CUEs for Pre-Plant Uses

15 Methyl Bromide Use on Strawberry
-based on Cal DPR Pesticide use reports

16 Other Fumigants No applications of Midas to strawberry on the coast…yet Counties are allowing more straight chloropicrin applications Broadcast applications of straight chloropcirin with TIF film will be important in the future Some Counties are allowing 300 and 350 lb broadcast applications of chloropicrin with TIF.
