1 A change grid Helen Jones helenjones2001 25/02/2019

2 George Kelly and Dennis Hinkle
This grid explores core values You are asked to elicit and ladder personal constructs You are then asked to work with a partner to compare all the core constructs with each other – it is quite difficult to do! helenjones2001 25/02/2019

3 CHOOSING ELEMENTS Choose twelve significant people in your life – past, present, future or idealised Write the initial of each person on one side of a card, write the number of the card on the other side Use people like: Self, ideal self, mother, spouse, admired, respected, not a good boss, someone you do not respect etc. helenjones2001 25/02/2019

4 Work with a partner Hand your cards to your partner who will elicit your personal constructs and note these on paper for you Only you need to know who you are thinking about – your partner is mainly a notetaker and listener helenjones2001 25/02/2019

5 Order of questioning On the handout provided you will see an order of questioning using the elements written on the cards The listener’s questioning should go like this: “Is there some way in which two of these people seem to have similar characteristics……?” helenjones2001 25/02/2019

6 Work with a partner (cont)
“And what, for you, is the contrast to that characteristic?” Do this for all the triads in order until you have a list of 12 – 16 personal constructs written as follows: friendly………………………hostile helenjones2001 25/02/2019

7 Work with a partner (cont.)
Next you should ladder as many of the personal constructs elicited as you have time for Laddering is very powerful – be gentle and sensitive to your partner’s responses helenjones2001 25/02/2019

8 Laddering Ask your partner to identify his or her preferred position on each of the personal constructs – and underline this Ask your partner to say why they prefer this…what is important to them about it..and write this down. Check its opposite helenjones2001 25/02/2019

9 Example of a ladder Friendly………………………Hostile +
feel confident………………..self conscious feel successful………………….failure helenjones2001 25/02/2019

10 DOING THE CHANGE GRID When you have laddered the chosen personal constructs you should write these on cards as shown below – make sure the preferred position is emphasised: 1a harmonious 1b conflict 2a fragmented b integrity helenjones2001 25/02/2019

11 Change grid form 1a 1b 2a 2b 3a 3b 4a 4b 4a 4b 5a 5b 5a 5b 6a 6b 6a 6b
helenjones2001 25/02/2019

12 Filling in the Change Grid
“If you were to wake up tomorrow morning and all you knew was that you could stay 1A HARMONIOUS but would have to accept 2a fragmented OR you could retain 2B INTEGRITY but you would have to accept 1b conflict – which would you prefer?” helenjones2001 25/02/2019

13 Filling in the form Ask these questions in the order indicated on the form In each pair circle the NON PREFERRED position which is selected in each quartet Add the number of circles for each answer and total at the bottom helenjones2001 25/02/2019

14 RESULTS – WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?
When you have added up all the circles put your cards on the table in front of you – lowest number of circles nearest to you and highest further away Does this make sense to you? Are those personal values nearest to you dearest to your heart? Can you compromise on them? Do you resist change on these? helenjones2001 25/02/2019

15 Are these your core values?
