1 PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
EDUCATION FOR JUSTICE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

2 Up to 2013 Jesuit Missions promotes ‘Development Education’, mainly through the Companions Programme (CP) ‘The Companions Programme nurtures a global community of schools who enrich each other and improve the world around them through mutual learning’

3 Companions Programme Strenghts Weaknesses
Committed network of educators; Particulary succesful in primary schools; Part of Jesuit Missions’ mission to build bridges between communities in the UK and overseas. USP (Unique Selling Point): promotes active engament between schools in the UK and overseas – bigger charities don’t tend to do this! Not always succesful at secondary school level, Low degree of structure and organisation in the past; Difficult to involve the whole school; Jesuit Missions’ profile in schools often remained low.

4 2013: Education for Justice (E4J)
Development Education, Jesuit Missions’ way . Rooted in the Jesuit Principle ‘A faith that does justice’ . Who is developed and who is not? Students and schools in the UK and overseas are all going to be empowered to promote social justice.

5 E4J vision… ‘A world where school communities collaborate actively in the promotion social justice in witness to the Christian faith and in collaboration with ‘all persons of good will’ ‘(GC 35, Decree 2-21).

6 …And how we are going to get there
Resources and guidelines for the Companions Programme; Capacity-building events and resources for schools; Promotion of fund-raising for E4J Zimbabwe; Collaboration with the Jesuit Institute.

7 E4J and CP commonalities
The Companions Programme is a programme part of the wider umbrella of Education for Justice; Both CP and E4J are rooted in Jesuit identity; Both the CP and E4J are run hand in hand with partners overseas; School staff and students are the heart of both programmes.

8 Considerations for the future
Companions Programme E4J Strong network of supporters needs tailored support and resources. Nurture and guide pre-existing community. General school resources and initiatives can be used by the whole school community with or without tailored support. Promote to a wider network.

9 Taking part in Education for Justice and/or in the Companions Programme enables schools to reach…
…‘The ultimate goal of Jesuit education […] - that full growth of the person which leads to action’ (‘Ignatian Pedagogy’, 1986)
