1 Focus Question: What did the American colonies have in common with one another?
Do Now: Complete Colonial Geography Map analysis activity.

2 Geography of the 13 British North American Colonies
1. Why do you think the 13 original British colonies of the United States were settled on the east coast of North America? 2. Which ocean were the colonies closest to? Why might access to harbors and ports on this ocean be important to the economy and sustainability [ability to last / be maintained for a long period of time] of the colonies?

3 What is the name of the mountain range that lines the western edge of the thirteen colonies?
Why might the population have first settled on the coast and rivers east of this mountain range?

4 Similarities among colonies
Geography Colonies settled on the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean on harbors Settled east of the Appalachian Mountain range on navigable rivers. Economics Trade with Britain Mercantilism = trade policies for Britain’s economic benefit Politics Salutary Neglect Self-government

5 Predictions: What could have happened between Britain and her colonies by 1763 to spoil this arrangement of Salutary Neglect? What effect might all those years of colonial self-government have on the relationship between the colonies and England?
