1 Comparing integers

2 Negative numbers on the number line
Zero Negative integers Positive integers The numbers –1, –2, –3, … (to the left of zero) are called negative integers The numbers 1, 2, 3,… (to the right of zero) as positive integers. The new set of numbers …, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,… are called Integers. ‘–’ symbol in front of a number is read as 'negative' or 'minus'. For example, –5 is read as negative 5 or minus 5. A number without a sign is considered as a positive number. For example, 5 is considered as +5.

3 When we move towards the right on the number line,
Left - Numbers smaller Right - Numbers larger When we move towards the right on the number line, the numbers become larger. When we move towards the left on the number line, the numbers become smaller.

4 Example1:- Compare -4 and 2
Solution From the number line we can see -4 is to the left of 2. ∴-4 < 2 (ans) Example 2:- Compare -2 and -9 From the number line we can see -2 is to the right of −9. ∴ -2 > (ans)

5 Example 3:- Compare -8 and -18
Solution From the number line we can see -8 is to the right of −18. ∴ -8 > (ans) Example4:- Compare -14 and 10 From the number line we can see -14 is to the left of 10. ∴-14 < (ans)

6 Try these Compare -4 and -10 Compare -5 and 2
