Excellent Case Jochen! I do so enjoy working with you. Your enthusiasm for satellite meteorology is inspirational! Thank you for offering me the opportunity to participate. I look forward to your next case! This is a wonderful example of a large and strong cold low. With two bands/chains of vorticity maximum wrapped around the “mother low”. The pattern is dominated by vorticity maxima as the flow is dominated by cyclonic curvature. The much weaker vorticity minima are on the periphery of the cyclonic flow to the right of the axes of maximum winds looking downstream. The location of the vorticity maxima must be to the left of the generating low looking downstream. Their location is best inferred by identifying the “backward s” deformation zone that connects them. In fact the vorticity maxima circulations are often very subtle while the sharp deformation zone that contrasts air masses, is very evident. There is a third very weak chain of vorticity maxima that are associate with the main deformation zone that encapsulates the warm conveyor belt that feeds into the cold low. These weak vorticity maxima are the reasons why the our edge of the cold low moisture is not perfectly round and smooth. These weak vorticity maxima are paired with and associated with the stronger vorticity maxima that are the result of t he strong axis of maximum winds that encircles the cold low. There are a few vorticity maximum-vorticity minimum deformation zones but these are few and far between as there are few vorticity minima. There must be vorticity minima between each and every vorticity maxima. They are there but are typically very, very subtle. It would challenge my credibility as well as my already fragile sanity to attempt to put them all in. Some fast moving cirrus streaks help to identify the multiple stream nature of the jet stream especially in those regions to the south of the upper cold low. X X X N X N X
