1 Water-saving Shower Faucet
By: LaJerrika Carney & Ryan McDaniel Advisor: Dr. Mohammad Saadeh Class Professor: Dr. Cris Koutsougeras ET Senior Design Southeastern Louisiana University Computer Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology

2 Background Today our faucets are equipped with the pressure–balancing control valve to help maintain water temperature in the shower Typically takes seconds for water to become hot Little research has been done on the amount of water wasted while waiting for the water to heat

3 Purpose Design a system that will reroute the water flow to the shower head and store leftover water. While adjusting the temperature through a 2-way solenoid and a heating element to prevent water wastage

4 Deliverables 1. Collect data through measuring the actual amount of wasted water and the desired water temperature. (September – mid October 2014) 2 weeks 2. Select and identify thermal sensor with measuring ranges in the vicinity of the desired temperature. (Mid-October – End-November 2014) 6 weeks 3. Select equipment to be used in building a prototype, this may include: a. Water heater (or a heating element) b. 2-way solenoid (connected to the major water tank and diverts water between the reservoir and the tub spout).

5 c. Water tanks d. Micro-controller e. Actuating device (i.e.: high torque servo motor) f. Pipes and hoses (PVC pipes, fittings, etc) (October – End-November 2014) 8 weeks  4. Independent research on materials and project. (November 2014 – January 2015) 5. Control the valve through the microcontroller using data collected from the sensor. (End-November 2014 – End-February 2015) 12 weeks 6. Build the prototype perform final testing. (March 2014 – End-April 2015) 8 weeks

6 Challenges Finding the correct parts.
Making sure our prototype is stable. Learning how to program the Arduino with the various parts used.
