3 Fort Lines The Indians were not happy with settlers moving onto their land – they tried to remove settlers through war/violence As people moved further and further west they demanded protection from the Indians Once a peaceful area was established settlers would move beyond the area again needing government protection

Why did there have to be so many forts in Texas at this time? Who was more likely to be attacked, Vandenburg or Huntsville? Why? How do you think Ft. Worth and Ft. Brown differed in their jobs? What do you think would happen if the soldiers left the forts? What would need to happen when settlers start to settle to the west of the line of defense?

7 What will happen when the civil War begins?
Think about how forts were set up, who they protected, and who lived in them. How will this change during the Civil War? What do you think the Indians will do?

8 When Texas seceded from the Union in 1861, U. S
When Texas seceded from the Union in 1861, U.S. troops were withdrawn from the state. Some Texans expected the Confederate Army to take over the protection of the frontier. However, Confederate soldiers were needed to fight in Civil War battles east of the Mississippi River. The few settlers who remained on the frontier became easy targets for Native Texan raids.

Why do you think that the Comanche and Kiowa share a reservation but the Mescalero don’t? What do the majority of the Forts protect now? What TOWN in Texas got it’s name from once being a fort? How has Texas changed since the last time we looked at forts in Texas?
