Time period after the Civil War that brought seceded states back into the US
Most of Texas was not ruined but the rest of the south needed to be rebuilt
Even though slaves were free they could not find jobs

3. Juneteenth
During the Civil War president Lincoln declared all slaves were free
Emancipation Proclamation of 1863
June Texas slaves finally found out they were free
Originally celebrated to teach freed slaves about voting rights

4. The Proclamation
The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.

5. Freedmen's Bureau
Bureau’s job was to provide relief to people that had been left homeless after the Civil War
Was also established to assist freed slaves in Southern states
Helped people find jobs and establish public schools for African Americans

6. Black Codes Laws that limited the rights of AA AA could not:
Testify against whites
Serve on juries
Work specific jobs

7. Ku Klux Klan Used violence and threats to keep AA from voting
Wore hoods and robes to hide their identity
Burned crosses in yards
Beat and killed AA that tried to exercise their right to equality
