1 Friction Force and Motion

2 Notes Write down the words in yellow.
The words in white are discussion points, you may write these down, but are not required.

3 Friction When objects fall to Earth’s surface, gravity is not the only force that acts on them. Friction is a force that acts between surfaces that touch each other. Friction slows an objects motion.

4 Friction When an object is moving, friction pushes it in the opposite direction. If you push a book across the table, friction between the tabletop and the book slows the book’s motion.

5 Friction The types of surfaces affect the motion of friction.
Friction is greater between rough surfaces than between smooth surfaces. It is harder to push a box on a rough sidewalk than on a smooth wooden floor.

6 Friction High Friction Surfaces carpet rough sidewalk grass gravel

7 Friction Low Friction Surfaces ice hardwood floor linoleum metal
plastic

8 Watch Bill Nye: Friction
Watch Newton’s Apple: The Science of Roller Coasters

9 Exit Ticket How does friction affect the motion of an object?
What types of surfaces have less friction?
