EU Strategic framework and national OSH Strategies Having an overarching EU framework that acts as a common guide / reference to develop national strategies is fundamental. The development of national OSH strategies allows to better apply the different aspects of this framework to the specific needs and situation in each Member State. 17 national strategies currently adopted compared to 27 in Several Member States are in the process of devising new national strategies, others do not currently have national strategies in place.

Involvement of OSH actors Tripartism [at all levels] remains the main pillar to achieve the widest collaboration and impact. Therefore social partners should play a key role in the development and implementation of national OSH strategies. Indicators and statistics [Realistic] Indicators [qualitatives and quantitatives] are needed to measure effectiveness and efficiency of the strategies and their activities. There is little stakeholder confidence in statistics. Data vary from one MS to another […] […] an EU OSH Information System will contribute to future information needs.

Results of the Workshop in 2016
Improving OSH in small and medium sized enterprises SMEs comprise more than 99% of all companies in the EU; SMEs need simple and specific tools to facilitate OSH activities. The main actions to take are the development of adapted tools [digital technologies] focusing on very practical measures. Reduction of injuries and illness [Continue to reduce accidents, but] a stronger emphasis should also be put on preventing work-related ill-health; […] it is important to strive to link up OSH with other policies.

Education and training OSH education from school and training throughout professional life are basic tools to achieve a safe and healthy professional life; Employers should ensure that all employees receive relevant information and training, including new and emerging risks, where appropriate. New patterns of employment New patterns of employment are already apparent, and influence the working conditions and safety and health of workers. The issue of ICT and new forms of employment was also a point of discussion. The workshop noted that further evidence on the relation between OSH and digital work is needed. It should be considered whether the OSH acquis is suited to deal with these new patterns of employment.
