Presentation on theme: "Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda."— Presentation transcript:

1 Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda.
WALK-IN Take out notebook, folder, pencil box and agenda. Copy this week’s agenda.

2 Quick Review of Inside the Cell
Watch this video clip about what’s INSIDE our cells. Then we’ll move on to OUTSIDE the cell, and how cells get put together in a living thing.

3 The Hierarchy of Cell Organization

4 Hierarchy A set of levels going from least organized to most organized.

5 5 levels of Cell Hierarchy
Cells Tissues Organs Organ systems Organisms Populations Ecosystems

7 We will read and discuss each slide.
Discussion and Notes We will read and discuss each slide. Write down the notes that are in red.

8 Cells The cell is the basic unit of structure and function of a living thing. * Are specialized by size and shape for the jobs they do. The amoeba above is made of only one cell and it must perform all the jobs of the organism.

9 T I S S U E S * Made of the same type of cells grouped together to do a specific job. Examples: 4 different types of animal tissues are epithelial, muscle, nervous, and connective. This pink sponge has only cells but they are not organized into tissues. The blue Man-o-war has tissues but no organs.

10 Organs * Made up of different tissues that work together to do a job.
Example: a heart is an organ made of all four tissues. This coral polyp is an organ and a leaf is a plant organ.

11 Organ Systems * A group of organs working together.
Example: Human organ systems include circulatory, reproductive, digestive, nervous, respiratory. Plant organ system-roots, stems, leaves = transport system.

12 Organisms The total of all cells, tissues, organs and organ systems makes an organism.

13 Read - Population A group of the same type of organisms all living together in the same place.

14 Read - Ecosystem Populations living together in one area.

15 All the ecosystems around the world make up the biosphere.
Read - Biosphere All the ecosystems around the world make up the biosphere.

16 Video Clip Watch this short video clip about the hierarchy of cell organization!

17 Practice Trace your hand on the back of a page.
Label each finger one of the levels of the hierarchy: Cell Tissue Organ Organ system Organism Explain how cells are organized at each level, in each finger. Draw a small picture clue to help you remember.
