Bell Work: 12/1/14  Why can’t you use your teeth to breathe?  Why can’t you use your arm muscles to digest food?

Objectives  Am I able to interpret a chart and explain the integrated relationships that exist among cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems? (SPI0707.1.2) 35. Levels of Organization (one page)  Explain the basic functions of a major organ system. (SPI0707.1.3)

From cells to organisms  How to we start off as one tiny cell and progress to an organism such as a tree, or humans, or animals? How to we start off as one tiny cell and progress to an organism such as a tree, or humans, or animals?

The Benefits of Being Multicellular  You are a MULTI-CELLULAR ORGANISM. That means you are made of many cells.  Benefits of being multicellular:  Larger size  Longer life  Specialization (more efficient)

Review…  What are cells?  Cells are the smallest unit that can perform all of the processes of life.

Cells Working Together  A TISSUE is a group of cells that work together to perform a specific job.  Animals have four basic types of tissues:  Nerve tissues  Muscle tissues  Connective tissues  Protective tissues  Plants have three types of tissues:  Transport tissues  Protective tissues  Ground tissues

Tissues Working Together  A structure that is made up of TWO or more TISSUES working together to perform a specific function is called an ORGAN.  Animal organs:  Heart, stomach, brain, lungs, intestines  Plant organs:  Roots, stems, leaves

Organs Working Together  A group of ORGANS working together to perform a particular function is called an ORGAN SYSTEM.  Examples: digestive system, respiratory system, circulatory system  Plants also have organ systems  Examples: leaf system, root system, stem systems

Organisms/Structure & Function  Anything that can perform life processes by itself is an ORGANISM.  Structure is the arrangement of parts in an organism. It includes the shape of a part and the material of which the part is made.  Function is the job a part does.

Levels of Organization CellsTissuesOrgans Organ Systems Organism

Cellular Organization  In your science notebook, list out each level or cellular organization from smallest to largest and give a brief description of each one.  We will share together as a class when you are done.
