2 First … 1. Do exercise 1 on the worksheet: talk about the pictures.

3 Next Look at the following picture slides and check if your ideas were correct.

4 The energy in uranium can be harnessed to produce electricity.

5 Uranium is mined from rocks before being crushed and concentrated

6 to make a powder called ‘yellowcake’.

7 The yellowcake is taken to a factory where it is turned into nuclear fuel rods.

8 At the factory, the nuclear fuel rods are placed under water inside a chamber.

9 Uranium atoms inside the rods are split into two smaller atoms and energy is released.

10 The energy heats the water and makes steam, which is then used to make turbines spin.

11 As the turbines spin they drive generators, which make electricity.

12 Electricity is sent via pylons and cables to homes around the country.

13 Now … Do exercise 2 on the worksheet: write captions under the pictures. 4. Do exercise 3 on the worksheet: complete the gaps.
