Chapter Five They finally meet!

Where did Victor see a large “beast?”
-In the yard through his bedroom window

“From the shrubbery there emerged what he thought at first was a trick of the shadows. Then he saw that it was some great beast. It was too far away from him to be able to see it clearly, but he imagined that it turned its head to look up at his window. To look directly at him… ” p.65

“…Then, in the blinking of an eye, it was moving at impossible speed across the silver grass until it was lost from his sight.” p.65

Discussion 1) What do you think the “beast” is? Is it an animal or something else? 2) Can you think of a reason why Victor would imagine this confrontation?

“Then, in the blinking of an eye, it was moving at impossible speed across the silver grass until it was lost from his sight.” p.65 1) It`s probably the monster. “Impossible speed” means it probably isn’t a common animal, this is supposed to give the readers a clue

Discussion 1) What do you think the “beast” is? Is it an animal or something else? 2) Can you think of a reason why Victor would imagine this confrontation? Let`s look at 2)

“…he knew that they were dead not through any malice but through his own folly. Their blood was on his hands…He was guilty of murder, but he was not a murderer. Pg. 65 “It was Elizabeth who finally roused him from his orgy of self- recrimination. Pg. 66 He felt guilty and responsible for Williams death. “his folly” “his hands” “he” = he has shifted all of the blame on himself Self-recrimination = blaming oneself

Why does Elizabeth say that Victor’s father feels like he has lost both of his sons?

“…come downstairs. Your father has lost one son to a murderer
“…come downstairs. Your father has lost one son to a murderer. At the moment he feels he`s lost another to the same murderer. He`s pining away –visibly dying – because you`re being some completely selfish, Victor. ” p.66-67

Victor William (Dead) (blaming himself in his room)
His father can`t see or talk to him His father can`t see or talk to him The results of their actions are the same, so his father feels like he has lost two sons. “To the same murderer” = because the reason victor is in his room is the murder, so the murderer has stolen all of Victor`s time and energy (he is all victor thinks about)

When will Victor and Elizabeth marry?
