1 The New Country Washington and Adams

2 Washington, the First President
Washington was a good first president He served two terms as president even though he didn’t entirely want to His Farewell Address is one of the most important American documents

3 John Adams John Adams became the second president of the United States in 1797 France and England were at war and Adams tried to negotiate with France for peace France refused to meet with the ambassadors sent over and demanded a large bribe Adams refused and was wildly popular for it There was an unofficial war with France for two years

4 The Sedition and Alien Acts
These were created by Adams in anticipation of the war with France The Alien Act was meant to limit the amount of immigrants from enemy countries admission to the United States It resulted in limiting those who would vote for the opposing political party, the Democratic-Republicans

5 The Sedition Act The Sedition Act made it illegal to print, say or do anything that was against the government These two acts infuriated Americans who saw it as an oppressive government just like the British Because of this, Thomas Jefferson easily won the election of 1801
