Acquisition of Samoa (3,000 miles south!) came soon after as trade increased in the Pacific. The U.S. forced its way into a base at Pago Pago
Meanwhile G.B. and Germany made treaties with Samoans, too, with the Germans ending up “sharing” control with the U.S.
