2 What is an Epic? An Epic is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nation

3 Components of an Epic Epics serve as a view into the important values of a culture. In the case of Beowulf, he represents the values of courage, strength in battle, and moral fiber. In many ancient culture we see a defining Epic including Greece, Rome, India, Mesopotamia, and West Africa

4 Who is Beowulf? Beowulf is the epic of the Anglo Saxons
The Anglo Saxons were Germanic tribesmen who crossed the English channel and battled the Celts, Britons, and Druids for control of modern day England The were fierce warriors and came from modern day Germany and Denmark They arrived in great numbers between AD

5 Anglo Saxons The Anglo Saxons were fierce warriors and were feared by many people in Europe at the time. They were seemingly invincible in battle and had modern weapon of the day, almost impenetrable armor, and they intimidated their enemies with fierce battle cries.

7 Anglo Saxons Anglo Saxons quickly defected other Tribes in the area and soon assumed control of England, pushing the Celts into modern Scotland, and the Britons into Whales.

9 Anglo Saxon’s The Anglo Saxon Language (Old English) was a forerunner to the English we speak in the U.S and U.K Anglo is a Latin prefix used to denote English- in conjunction with another toponym or demonyn. The word is derived from Anglia , the Latin name for England. Anglia and England both mean land of the Angles , a Germanic people originating in the north German peninsula of Angeln.

11 Beowulf While we do not no the date that it was written, Beowulf was the Epic tale of the Anglo Saxon people. The earliest known written copy dated between the 8th and 11th century AD, but it was most likely an oral tale long before that The Character of Beowulf represents what these people valued in a man

12 Beowulf Beowulf a hero of the Geats, comes to the aid of Hroogar, the king of the Danes (Denmark), whose great hall, Heorot, is plagued by the monster Grendel. Later, he becomes the kind of the Geats, but his realm comes under attack from a Dragon. He being a hero, must face both challenges, and save his people
