1 Blended Learning: Improve Disaster Risk Management in India by Using Knowledge-Base and Statistics
24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

2 Content of Presentation
The scope and purpose of the training The contents and methods of the training The Web Quests Expected outcome and best practices 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

3 Scope and Purpose Training type
Blended Learning: Web Based Training + Classroom Training Target group DRM Staff from various authorities: States and Districts Course objectives Use of available fact based information to improve preparedness, response to disasters and relief and recovery after disasters Outline Duration Three Modules, Web Quests, 4 weeks of Web Based Training (WBT) + 5 days classroom 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

4 The new WBT Link: 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

5 Alternative Setup 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

6 Module 1: Introduction to Statistical Terminology
Use of descriptive statistical indicators for real current data (mean, median and standard deviation ), use of graphs and interpretation of graphs, learn about indices, describe risk periods and areas Example: Rainfall Patterns in Bihar / Patna District 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

7 Guided Exercises: Analyse Rainfall Patterns in other Districts of Bihar
Subjects treated: What can we learn of these Measures of Dispersion? When are the different Measures of Dispersion best used? Where are the different Measures of Dispersion applied for DRM? Resume of the Examples of Rainfall Figures from Bihar State using Statistics 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

8 A new page of Modul1 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

9 Module 2: Use Statistical Information on recent and passed disasters
Information on past disasters (frequency, repetition pattern), Maps and graphs displaying frequency and severity of floods or other disasters, identify disaster prone periods, areas and relative secure periods Example and Exercises: Comparative Ranking of Indian States according to disaster risks As a result of the exercise we will come up with something like this: 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

10 Example of Exercises on Cyclone Risks in Andhra Pradesh
24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

11 Module 3: Understand “Cause and Effects of disasters described by statistics”
Information on economical figures, Use statistical methods (EXCEL) to estimate dependencies and predictions, Learn to identify “causes and effects” in statistical terms, Understand limits of “causes and effects” Example and Exercises: Comparison of Means, 0-Hypothesis and t-Test for comparing Rainfall Patterns Example and Exercises: Correlation for Bihar Rainfall and Human Casualties (1979 – 2008) Example and Exercises: Multiple Regression for explaining Gujarat Droughts (1982 – 2008) 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

12 Example and Guided Exercises: A Disaster Risk Index for major Indian Cities using Factor Analysis
Subjects treated: Learn about hypothesis and testing Correlation is in indicator of causal relation but not sufficient as an explanation Regression can “explain” Disaster Results like Drought by related Data Factor and Principal Component Analysis show relationships among data series related to pre-disaster, relief and post-disaster management 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

17 Common Features and specific for this Web Based Training Course
• web-based training materials • tutor input, tutorial (training videos) • group work • discussions in online forums & chats • assessments and exercises • interactive tasks, internet links, glossary • reading and support material 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

18 The WebQuests (1) What are the WebQuests
A "WebQuest," is an inquiry-based, on-line learning activity. During this activity students work in groups, dividing assignments among each other, so that everyone participates in a group-assigned role. The objective of the activity is to promote "transformative" learning outcomes, accomplished through the reading, analysis, and synthesis of Web-based information, which was acquired in the E-learning phase 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

19 The WebQuests (2) Structure of a WebQuest
All WebQuest have a predefined structure where the exercise for solving a Task related to the course subject is described in the chapters: TASK PROCESS RESOURCES CONCLUSION / EVALUATION Participants receive the description of a specific WebQuest after having completed an E-learning stage 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

20 The WebQuests (3) The Case Study WebQuest
The Case Study WebQuest will be prepared, solved or completed by participants invited for the classroom workshop. This will give room for referring to contents and subjects treated in and during the participation of the e-learning phase. It is recommended to include a holistic use of module contents in the case study and the related WebQuest, but participant can pick special subjects or focus their case study on specific interest elements. 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

21 WebQuest of Module3: “Understand causes and effects of disasters as described by statistics” Introduction & Content 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

22 WebQuest of Module3: “Understand causes and effects of disasters as described by statistics” Task & Process 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

23 WebQuest of Module3: “Understand causes and effects of disasters as described by statistics” Evaluation 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant

24 Expected outcome and results
Expected results and impacts The training enables participants to consult available statistical information and narrow the risk scenario. Participants are able inform users about risk scenarios and create awareness of presumptive victims of disasters in the target areas. Indicators for success and impact Participants consult independently and with confidence available information for target areas. The awareness of the risks increases (Visibility of risk awareness). The response to this type of disasters is quicker (Response time reduction); Number victims and damages is reduced over time. 24/02/2019 An introduction course on InWEnt Blended-learning approach - Klaus Röder / Consultant
