1 Passenger Mobility Statistics 2017
Task Force on Passenger Mobility Statistics 11 October 2018 Alenka Škafar

2 The aim of Module 1 in the grant 2016
to produce reliable information on mobility for the first time for the whole country the goal reached by a new Survey on Passenger Daily Mobility (SPM) the Eurostat Guidelines on Passenger Mobility Statistics proved to be a useful document to conduct a pilot study Smart Telephones as a Method of Data Collection in the Passenger Mobility Statistics an interesting experience, not only for the mobility statistics but also as an experiment for our office

3 SPM – plan of activities and timetable
included trips up to 300 km (urban/non-urban, working days/non-working days) data-collection period: second half of September and in October 2017 (6 weeks) two independent samples for two modes of data collection (CAWI and CAPI) going on simultaneously outsourcing of the data collection sample unit: an individual aged 15–84 living in a private household

4 SPM – questionnaire (1) the same content for CAWI and CAPI mode
followed definitions and methodology from the Guidelines included trips and stages mostly positive impressions by the respondents and interviewers about clarity and simplicity of the questionnaire (also some negative, e.g. why asking about the income)

5 SPM – questionnaire (2) What could be better:
more precise information on distance and also travel time with better understanding of the concept of a trip by using geocoding

6 SPM – methodological questions
We decided on some methodological solutions which can be debatable, for example: salespersons and similar occupations: one has a trip to work – to the 1st client and from work – from the last client – other trips to clients were not taken into account – decided after the pilot survey – supposed to be too complicated going to a forest or countryside to pick e.g. mushrooms or other products (fruits) – one made a very short distance while (s)he used a lot of time – such trips were eliminated as outliers

7 SPM – sample design Two independent samples for two simultaneously used modes of data collection CAWI sample CAPI sample Sample design stratified sample, systematic sampling stratified two-stage sampling No. of selected persons 15,015 8,001 Age of selected persons 15–64 15–84 (age 65–84 oversampled)

8 SPM – response rate The response rate was within expected limits:
CAPI: 61% CAWI: 26% both modes: 38% total number of questionnaires: 8,961 total number after data treatment: 8,842

9 SPM – data treatment raw data joined in a database
a lot of individual corrections most systematic corrections done at stages: the distances and travel time for the certain type of travel mode several weights were calculated to get one weight for each respondent (sample weights, adjustments weights for non-response, calibration weights)

10 SPM – preliminary results
sent to Eurostat at the end of April published in Slovenia in September

11 SPM – future work Within the grant 2017:
we are proceeding with data treatment, with more complex data controls, imputations, etc. we intend to publish the final data in our database, and prepare a publication in Slovene and English with more detailed data by the end of October 2019

12 Smart phones as a method of data collection in the passenger mobility statistics
A pilot study to get experience in developing and preparing an application (available for Android and iOS mobile operating systems) in promotion of an application among users/respondents in data treatment (like dealing with big data)
