The Dutch travel survey Mixed-mode experiences from the Netherlands Ilona Bouhuijs Netherlands Statistics June 17th 2013 Disclaimer: the views expressed in this presentation are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policies of Statistics Netherlands

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 1 History of travel surveys in the Netherlands 1978-2003: OVG (Onderzoek Verplaatsingsgedrag) performed by Netherlands Statistics, Ministry of Transport is client and main user 2004-2009: MON (Mobiliteitsonderzoek Nederland), outsourced to Social Data, Ministry of Transport is client and main user 2010 and further: OViN (Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland), performed again by Netherlands Statistics, Ministry of Transport is client and main user

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 2 Daily survey on travel patterns of Dutch people on Dutch territory trip origins and destinations time of day mode choice travel purposes Also detailed information about explanatory variables on level of households, persons, trips and stages Important input for national and regional transport policy What is OViN?

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 3 OViN is new… From paper questionnaires to mixed mode approach first approach by internet (CAWI), followed by telephone (CATI) in case we have a telephone number available, otherwise face-to-face (CAPI) Persons instead of households Still information about households available: Of all household members: age, gender, marital status, household position Possession of means of transport Linkable with a wide range of register information

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 4 Demands and possibilities National sample: 32.100 responses Regional oversampling: 10.000 responses Responses available for each day of the year No incentives Possibilities to oversample regions or subpopulations or to include additional questions in the survey e.g. Amsterdam and The Hague

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 5 Two stage sample of persons First stage: stratified sample of municipalities Second stage: random sample of persons from selected municipalities Every month an update: births, moves, deaths, emigration Sampling procedure

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 6 CAWI rappel 1 CAWI rappel 2 CAPI CATI Survey design

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 7 CAWI: letter of announcement followed by two reminders CATI: 3 contact days, 3 attempts a day CAPI 6 attempts aiming to a dispersion over the month Survey design

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 8 Data processing Processing data involves the transition of response file (with response data) to an analysis file (with research data). Response data become available in two files: one for cawi and one for capi/cati.

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 9 Data enrichment Two types of data enrichments: Data about (household) incomes Other data from the Administration of Municipalities (GBA) and geographical classifications

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 10 Weighting Goal: Assigning a value expressing the relative importance of an item so that the variables in the database represent the Dutch population. Weighting corrects for bias in: - gender- age - civil status - region - level of urbanisation- household size - income- car possession

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 11 Development of number of respondents over the years

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 12 Responses by mode for gender and origin (excluding regional oversampling)

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 13 Responses by mode for age (excluding regional oversampling)

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 14 Results -2010, 2011 en 2012 are not comparable with previous years !!!! -Interruption in the time series

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 15 Interruption of time series Redesign in: survey design data collection approach questionnaire weighting processes will lead to mode effects These effects will be quantified early next year

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 16 Total number of kilometers in the NL

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 17 Number of trips per person per day

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 18 Participation

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 19 Use of public transport

Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 20 Distance per trip

Smartphone project (1) Gaining more insight in possibilities to use Smartphones as additional mode in the National Travel Survey Automatic registration of trips by an app Additional questions via app: about personal and household characteristics possession of car, motorcycle, moped and bike Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 21

Smartphone project (2) Other important issues: Security Privacy Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 22

OViN onderzoek 23 Smartphone project (3)

Smartphones (4) Results show that an app on the smartphone is able to detect trips of respondents However, the quality of measurement is still insufficent Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 24

Smartphones (5) Decreasing battery use will lead to less precise observations Limited possibilities for routing in the questionnaire More investigation required! Onderzoek Verplaatsingen in Nederland 25
