1 LO: What is specific heat and how does it affect InSolAtion?
Do Now: Define Insolation. Take out your ESRT.

2 Land and Water Heating The Greenhouse Effect
- Water heats up and cools off at a much slower rate than land. Reasons: 1. Water has a much higher specific heat. 2. Insolation can penetrate up to 300ft in water but less than 1ft in land. 3. Convection currents distribute absorbed energy through large volumes of water. 4. Some of the energy absorbed by water is converted to stored heat to evaporate the water. The Greenhouse Effect - The atmosphere transmits short-wave radiation from insolation and absorbs long- wave insolation from Earth. - Greenhouse gases: 1. Methane 2. Carbon Dioxide 3. Water Vapor - Most of the radiation given off by the Earth is absorbed by the atmosphere. - This absorption acts as a blanket regulating the heat loss to outer space. - Without the greenhouse effect the average temp. would be 0°F (-18°C)

3 Specific Heat Practice
Formula for Specific Heat J= (mass) x (specific heat) x ( t)

4 Practice Problem #1 Calculate the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of 3g of water from 20°C to 50°C.

5 Practice Problem #1 Calculate the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of 3g of water from 20°C to 50°C. J= (3g) (50°C-20°C) (4.18cal/g) J= (3g) (30°C) (4.18cal/g)

6 Practice Problem #1 J= 376.2 or 376.2 Joules
Calculate the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of 3g of water from 20°C to 50°C. J= (3g) (50°C-20°C) (4.18cal/g) J= (3g) (30°C) (4.18cal/g) J= or Joules

7 Activity Complete questions #1-#9! We will go over these!!!

8 Anwers 2. J= 47.25 3. J=399.25 4. J= 594.89 5. Delta T= 0.308 °C
7. M= 3.7 g 8. Specific Heat = 2.00 cal/g = Water Vapor 9. Specific Heat= 4.18 cal/g=liquid water

9 Summary How does specific heat differ based upon material?
Make a hypothesis on why water takes longer to heat up than land.

10 LO: How does Latitude affect Insolation?
Do Now: What is the formula for Specific heat? Get your Plicker Cards.
