The story gets worse looking at the this article that was on the front page of the NY Times:
The article identifies 3 things that went wrong in the laptop implementations:
1) software available was corporate Microsoft office clerical/productivy software instead of software with application to the K12 classrooms
2) We need more than training teachers on how to use laptops, but we need PD show teacher how to integrate the laptop in to teaching and learning so that laptops can be sustainable
3) Laptops were not sustainable b/c the dollars were not available to maintain, replace and repair let alone increase the available laptops
