4 Educating the Mobile Generation
Pencil and Paper is BORING!!! “Outside of school, technology is essential to their lives.” Julie Evans, Speak Up Day It is not business as usual. The kids in elementary today are different from the kids in high school today. The elementary kids want to learn on their own terms “I want to learn my way” Teachers need to teach them on their terms New teachers have new technology skills but need help in taking their skills and use them to integrate into the classroom in teaching and learning When students learn their way and teachers are allowed to teach their way we see an increase in student performance “I’m learning my way”

5 21st Century Skills To teach 21st century skills & content…
…..Need 21st century tools 1:1 Why do kids need computers, opportunities to learn in different ways 5 5

6 1:1 Laptops: Learn from U.S. Failures
Missing Pieces: NOT Integrated !! 1. Educational Software 2. Professional Development 3. Sustainable The story gets worse looking at the this article that was on the front page of the NY Times: The article identifies 3 things that went wrong in the laptop implementations: 1) software available was corporate Microsoft office clerical/productivy software instead of software with application to the K12 classrooms 2) We need more than training teachers on how to use laptops, but we need PD show teacher how to integrate the laptop in to teaching and learning so that laptops can be sustainable 3) Laptops were not sustainable b/c the dollars were not available to maintain, replace and repair let alone increase the available laptops

7 21st Century Skills To teach 21st century skills & content…

17 Hands-on activity and blog posting:
MLE Example Maybe different amounts of evaporation caused our measurements to be different. My rain measuring tool was in the sun, so maybe it evaporated faster. Hands-on activity and blog posting: Assignment: we will make a rain measurement tool in class. Measure rainfall at your house for two weeks. Record the rainfall on the blog every day. Compare your measurements with other students’ findings. Are all the measurements the same? Why or why not?

22 Curriculum Strategies:
Professional Development Integrate Tech into Existing Curriculum Curriculum Strategies: To transform pencil-and-paper lessons into complete & comprehensive mobile-computer-based, engaging lessons What about settling the two quandaries I mentioned earlier? The outcomes are demonstrable and substantive: students become autonomous learners classrooms see fewer behavioral problems student attendance goes up and most importantly, student motivation goes up. There is a night & day difference in student engagement: using pencil- and-paper is boring, but using the NOVA5000+MLE is exciting and engaging. Educators know that increased motivation and increased time on task leads to increased student achievement. All students – from the struggling learners to the talented and gifted, and all those in between, will benefit from using GoKnow software on the Nova5000. 22

23 Impressive Results: St Mary’s Ohio - 2009

24 “Ed Sec says yes to cell phones in class” Leadership
The highest ranking educator in America, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has publically stated that he supports the use of cell phones in K-12 classrooms. Simply put, what better endorsement can there be?
