Academic Integration Collaboration Day – Zone II Introduce self and others Dave Arntsen Recognize Mike Woods - Work with Zone II Thank the Zone 2 CTE Directors who supported your attendance at this meetinh. May 3, 2018 Facilitated by Dr. Constance H. Spohn, Assistant Director

2 PURPOSE Establish an academic CTE Professional Learning Community (PLC) that explores best practices within our respective schools and fosters a collaborative framework from which we can grow and positively impact student achievement within the ACTEA Zone. This is the purpose – It is a replication of an session that was done in Zone III in June 2017 which was extremely well received. CTE TAC then brought the idea to Zone II. For several years, we have had the concern that the academic integration teachers needed more support and professional development opportunities. CTE TAC also decided to find out more about what was happening with Integrated academics across the state and did some research last year. Some of the information will be shared with you today.

3 GOALS Share current realities;
Share two innovative lessons, strategies or initiatives that are viable; Share information about and discuss NYS research on academic integration practice Next steps. 15 minutes

4 Outcomes List of lessons and/or initiatives on a Padlet to be shared with all participants. Follow up survey to direct future collaboration Anecdotal feedback on implementation of one innovative lesson and its impact on student learning. Initial questioning of success and quality of academic integration programs

If you are not already sitting at your assigned table, please move to the table number that is on your name – tag. Take a minute to introduce yourselves before you start the task I will present.

6 Establishing Purpose Instructional time Schedules # of preps
# of students Push in / pull out model for Integration Next, you will see here some talking points that I want your group to discuss based on your home BOCES site. Take 10 minutes and talk amongst yourselves as to what your model of academic integration looks like at your home school. Set timer – 10 min. Give 1 min. warning I would like to bring your attention back here so that we can stay on time with our agenda. You should be able to recognize now that there are many different models of academic integration, and all of them with the same underlying goal which is: NEXT SLIDE

7 Academic integration is:
The instruction of NYS Standards across academic subjects in a contextualized, immersive, and collaborative CTE classroom setting We want you to have a better understanding of the challenges associated with the delivery of academics in this type of setting. It is not perfect, or is it easy. But it is possible, it is achievable and moreover, it can be quite fun. In collaborating with your colleagues, you should have heard pain points similar to yours and maybe learned that your reality is not so bad after all. You may have also gleaned some ideas to bring back to your BOCES site, that you can share with your colleagues with the intent of improving your programs. Let’s take a moment to hear what you thought were “good ideas” to take back. SHARE OUT Let’s begin working on sharing of best practices that you are currently using. If you are not sitting at the table with others from your content area please make sure you find the corresponding table. We will be using a PADLET to record ideas and resources that may inform your practice in the upcoming year. As you discuss please keep personal track of three ideas that you find of particular interest/use to you. We will be doing a sharing protocol using these three ideas later on. You have Index cards on your table – please Use the cards to record the three take-aways ideas you want to share later. Bulleted lists are fine-these are not going to be collected, so you need only write enough that you can briefly describe the fact, resource or idea that you found compelling.

8 Padlet https://padlet.com/spohnch/ylqkgta1jx5m
Select a recorder for each table. Recorder: access the group Padlet above. Add new comments, images, links, etc. Please label according to subject and move to the proper column Demonstrate briefly

9 80 Minute Timer

10 When you return, please sit with
15 Min BREAK When  you  return, please sit with the integrated team from your own BOCES.

11 Whip-it In this activity, you will share the top three favorite take-aways you put on your cards. Protocol works like this: Each person has three ideas on their index card. We all stand and go around a circle, saying the first thing on the list. If you have the same thing on your card, cross it out. You will share the next one on the list when it is your turn. WE will continue whipping around the room until all ideas are shared. As all three ideas on your card are mentioned, please sit down. This way we will have a collective starting point upon which to draw for our next step discussions. At end – introduce Dave Arntsen, consultant and the work of the CTE TAC

12 CTE TAC Research – Academic Integration
A Proposal to Enhance Integration of Academics in New York State Career and Technical Education

13 Next Steps- Consider: What might you be interested in trying at your home site? What might you be interested in discussing or doing at a future PLC? At your table, discuss ideas that you might want to incorporate into you home BOCES for the spring semester. Please consider potential ideas for a future PLC meeting.

14 CTE Academic Integration PLC
TEAM DRIVE This drive will provide you with the contact information for each participant and documents from today. This drive has been created for you to use in your collaboration. CTE Academic Integration PLC

15 Exit Ticket You will see a pile of short surveys on your tables. Please complete one before you leave. To close our academic integration collaboration day I would like to say that in no way are we expecting you to deliver academic integration in the same way in all your BOCES, it is not a cookie cutter approach as you should have seen. Because of your settings, schedules, programs and even students there can’t be a cookie cutter approach in the delivery. We do hope that today gave you some ideas and strategies to iprove your practice and you need to continue to be involved in the PLC and help it grow. Thank Dave A., Mike Woods, Dave Stayton and your directors for helping to make this day happen. And finally, thank ou for coming, sharing your ideas and showing interest in honing your craft.
