1 Order of Operations 1-2 Objective: Students will evaluate numerical expressions and algebraic expressions using the order of operations. S. Calahan 2008

2 Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
P – do parentheses or grouping symbols first. E – Exponents M & D – do multiplication/division from left to right in the order it appears. A & S – do Addition/Subtraction from left to right in the order it appears. 2/24/2019

3 3+ 2 • 3 + 5 3 + 6 + 5 = 9 + 5 = 14 Evaluate Expressions
Multiply 2 • 3 first: 6 = = 14 2/24/2019

4 15 ÷ 3 • 5 – 42 exponent first 15 ÷ 3 • 5 – 16 now division
15 ÷ 3 • 15 ÷ 3 • 5 – exponent first 15 ÷ 3 • 5 – now division 5 • 5 – 16 = = 9 2/24/2019

5 2(5) + 3(4 + 3) parentheses first
2(5) + 3(7) multiply from left to right = 31 2/24/2019

6 2[5 + (30 ÷ 6)2] parentheses first 2(5 + 52) now exponents
2(5 +25)= 2(30) = 60 2/24/2019

7 22 = 11 36 18 6 +16 add the numerator 9 • 4 multiply the denominator
exponents first 32 • 4 add the numerator 9 • multiply the denominator 22 = 11 2/24/2019

8 Evaluate an Algebraic Expressions
a2 – (b3 – 4c) if a = 7, b = 3 and c = 5 Substitute: 72 – (33 – 4 • 5) Now follow the order of operation: 2/24/2019

9 72 – (33 – 4 • 5) parentheses exponent first
72 – (27 – 4 • 5) multiply in parentheses 72 – (27 – 20) subtract in parentheses 72 – exponent 49 – 7 = subtract 2/24/2019
