2 Intolerable acts England was not pleased with the rebellious colonists. In 1774, they passed a series of laws called “Coercive Acts” These were to punish the colony of Massachusetts. Make it serve as an example to the other colonies. What was the punishment?....

3 Intolerable Acts (coercive acts)
1. Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston to trade. 2. Massachusetts Government Act took away the colony’s charter. They could no longer hold town meetings. 3. Quartering Act required that colonists provide housing for British soldiers. 4. Impartial Administration of Justice Act says that British officials can be tried basically anywhere.

4 First continental Congress
Other colonies were angry at the British Government for what they were doing to Massachusetts. Virginia suggest that the colonies meet together to formulate a plan. This led to the First Continental Congress in 1774. How did Georgians respond? While they were concerned with the Quartering Act, especially with having to pay for them, the colonists still did not have a STRONG desire for independence. * All colonies were present EXCEPT GEORGIA!

5 Moving Towards independence
A fight will break out between the Americans and the British. King George said that the colonists will not be granted independence without a fight. The first armed conflict of the American Revolution takes place at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. The dates of the conflict is April 19th.
