1 Lesson 7: Sustainable Development
MUST: To suggest which of the two approaches to development is the most successful SHOULD: To conclude which of the two approaches to development is the most successful in relation to making development more sustainable COULD: To evaluate the two approaches against sustainability criteria

2 Starter Activity Recap in your books lesson 1 when you identified which you thought was the best option top-down or bottom up Do you still agree with your choice? Add in evidence

3 Sustainability Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising (limiting) the ability of future generations to meet their own needs

4 The Criteria – are they achievable?
Involve local people in decision making Be affordable – not put countries/people into debt Promote good help i.e. no negative effects on people Protect and encourage native plants and animals Use land that has already been developed before i.e. brownfield sites Minimise waste and encourage recycling Minimise energy use and use natural resources e.g. solar power Minimise pollution Minimise water use and use rainwater where possible Offer benefits to the poor as well as the rich

5 Malthus Population increases exponential i.e. 1,2,4,8,16
Resources increae arithmetically i.e.1,2,3,4 Will come a point of crisis = famine!

6 Theories - Boserup Population growth has a possitive impact on people as it enables them to cope and invent new ways of feeding ourselves Food supply Total Population

7 Task Using the index of sustainability complete it for both the top-down and bottom up scheme. Explain your findings – which type of development is best when trying to deal with the issue of rural periphery?

8 Plenary

9 Homework Produce revision cards on the topic of development dilemmas
Higher students – prepare to be able to teach one section of this topic to the class next lesson ◊ The rate that areas develop vary spatially both in countries and in general ◊ How this uneven development leads to disparities with a developed core region and a more rural backward periphery in any countries and regions ◊ How at a world scale, disparities can lead to different rates of development ◊ How there are different ways development can take place ◊The advantages and disadvantages of named top-down development ◊ What the features of bottom-up developments are and how they compare to top down strategies ◊ What are the advantages of sustainable development ◊ How appropriate technology can play a vital role in development
