30 the Prose Prompt The prompt may ask for a number of things:
Analyze narrative and literary techniques used for characterization How does a narrator reveal character? (tone, diction, syntax, p.o.v., etc.) Effect of the passage on a reader Compare/contrast two passages (diction, effect on reader) Attitude of the speaker towards a particular subject Style and tone to explore author’s attitude toward subject Pay attention to wording If the prompt asks for techniques, it is looking for more than one. If the prompt suggests techniques (using such as…) you are not required to use those techniques but may want to explore them If the prompt asks for specific techniques/elements (symbolism, tone, structure, etc.) then use those techniques
