1. How to identify prestigious journals and conferences

2. Introductory comments:
    
Although this webinar focuses on text, many other forms of publication, such as video, TED Talks, etc. are important
Consider why you want to publish? (e.g., share ideas, get feedback, salary increase and/or promotion and tenure, etc.)
Several attempts often needed -- feedback is useful
Select the publication or conference to fit your objectives
Focus of publication or conference -- the field broadly, specialization (e.g., archives, information systems, etc.) , specific subject or geographic area, etc.
Consider an open source publication for wide readership, many highly competitive, some less so.
Languages (e.g., English only, 1-2 languages, translation services, etc.)

3. Prestige -- No single definition -- how is this defined and by whom?
How does your organization define prestige?
Which do your organization consider to be prestigious?
Which are highly cited in your specialization and field?
Where your colleagues publish and present
Which ones supervisor, senior colleagues and leaders consider prestigious

4. Journal Impact Factor – one frequently used measure

5. No single "ideal" manuscript -- much depends on scope and characteristics of the publication.
Essential to read guidelines and requirements for publication and several of the articles (not just table of contents) across numerous issues edited by current editor
BE REALISTIC about whether your work really fits the criteria and quality of the publication.
Don't aim too high get published but don't set too low a target.

6. Major characteristics of “ideal” manuscripts
Scope, especially related to the kind of research included (e.g., NOT simply a descriptive study of one small project).
Quality of work, including: clear description of project
Discussion of previous studies
Methodology used (does NOT have to be quantitative for many publications)
Presentation and analysis of data (often data sets must be included)
Clear conclusions

7. Limitations of research Discussion of findings Future research
Comprehensive bibliography of resources on previous studies cited, following required style
Abstract -- follow publication's guidelines carefully
Most require informative -- not indicative abstracts

8. Citations and bibliography – follow the publication's guidelines precisely (e.g., APA, MLA or other style used).
Clarity of writing with careful proofreading to correct all errors and editing of language.
Examine issues to see style and type of language used (e.g., version of English or other language, use of articles such as in the Internet, etc.)
