1 Carbon Capture and Storage
Richard Heap, Energy and Climate Change, Science Policy Section

2 Royal Society energy policy work
Climate change and ocean acidification Energy security A range of technologies will be required, with some requiring further RD&D to bring them to market. Priority should be on demand reduction and energy efficiency. Much greater public and private investment in energy research is needed Areas of interest includes: Technology timeframes How UK can achieve 60% - 80% cut in emissions? Saturday, 23 February 2019

3 Carbon Capture and Storage
Areas of work Biofuels Economic instruments Ocean acidification Solar power Hydrogen Carbon Capture and Storage The primary driver for our work on energy is responding to climate change and ocean acidification from atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. This includes work on the technologies and policies to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, especially CO2. For eaxmple how can the UK reduce its emissions by 60-80%. Our work is not just UK focussed, but looks at the and internationally focussed In the UK this Although, as yet we have not done any work specifically on energy security, but it is an important consideration in all our work. Policy reports and international workshop Policy reports: Our most recent report is shown here. Primary emphasis should be on economic instruments, such as a carbon tax and auctioned tradeable emission permits Other recent reports International workshops: Saturday, 23 February 2019

4 Carbon Capture and Storage
1999 – CCS was an emerging issue need for R&D 2007 – Need demonstration plants Urgent progress needed on low carbon technologies – including CCS CCS could reduce costs of mitigation policies Demonstrations need to build confidence Potential role of CDM for widespread deployment Need to address in parallel technical, economic, policy , regulatory and legal issues Demonstrate safe storage potential Saturday, 23 February 2019
