1 Lesson Starter. Q: Four groups measured the height of their table.
Their results were: 92cm, 103cm, 110cm, and 95cm. Calculate the average height of the tables.

2 Calculations in science.
Aims: Carry out chemical reactions and observe changes in appearance.

3 You should be able to do these by the end of the lesson!
Success Criteria WHAT CAN I DO? Red Amber Green Work safely in the Science Lab obeying safety rules. Measuring with precision appropriate to the technique. Observe carefully what happens in experiments. Identify a chemical reaction by a change in appearance in a substance. You should be able to do these by the end of the lesson!

4 Chemical Reactions A chemical reaction occurs when a new substance is formed. It cannot be reversed. Evidence of a chemical reactions is: Gas Precipitate (solid forming) Colour change Energy change (eg. Heat or light being given off)

5 Physical Change A physical change alters the form of a substance, but does not change it to another substance. Water boiling Making orange juice

6 Mixing Chemicals Station 1 – Mix 5ml of Lead Nitrate with 5ml of Potassium iodide in a test tube. Write down what you observe. Station 2 – Mix one spatula of marble chips with 5ml of hydrochloric acid in a test tube. Write down what you see. Station 3 – Mix 3ml of olive oil with 5ml of water. Write down what you see. Station 4 – Mix one spatula of copper filings with 5ml of water. Write down what you see.

7 You should be able to do these by the end of the lesson!
