5 CHAPTER 13.2 YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM!
By Captain Ron

6

7 Brain: command center or control center of nervous system.
The Nervous System Nervous System: the body’s message and control center, the N.S. carries messages back and forth between your brain and your body. Brain: command center or control center of nervous system.

8 The Nervous System Controls all body processes, such as digestion, breathing and blood flow through the body. It processes your physical and emotional feelings, and react to stimuli (changes in the environment that cause responses).

9 Which systems bow down before the NS?
ALL! Even the mighty endocrine system! It’s like Alastar Moody coming up to Albus Dumbledore and calling him out or Arcanine telling Snorlax he’s a wimp! 3 principle function: Sensory Input, Integration and Motor Output

10 Neurons are cells that make up the nervous system
Neurons are cells that make up the nervous system. They are also called nerve cells and carry the messages throughout the body.

11

12 CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Include brain and spinal cord. The brain makes the decisions.

13 Brain power The brain controls your thoughts, speech, memory, and muscle movement. It controls voluntary (controlled by the cerebellum) and involuntary muscles (controlled by the brain stem).

14 Keeping with Brain Power!
The largest and most complex part of the brain is the cerebrum. It controls language, memory and thoughts.

15 The Spinal Cord is part of the CNS and IS a long bundle of neurons that messages to and from the brain and all parts of the body. The brain responds to the body through the spinal cord. The structure of the spine include the 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar vertebrae and the coccyx and sacrum.

16 Peripheral Nervous System
All the nerves that branch off from the brain and spinal cord. PNS divisions: Afferent or Sensory and Efferent or Motor.

17 PNS The peripheral nervous system handles the movements you control and those you do not control. Examples are the raising of your handle and for the later, your heart beat.

18 Problems affecting your Nervous System.
Paralysis: the loss of feeling or movement in body parts. Multiple sclerosis (MS): damages the outer part of some nerves and can cause problems with thinking and memory or movement.

19 Problems of the NS continued
Cerebral Palsy: inherited or injury caused disorder that affects physical movement and 45% of patients have learning disabilities-NOT ALL! Alzheimer’s disease: harms the brain and causes memory loss.

20 Parkinson’s disease: cause shaking and stiffening of the limbs.
More problems Parkinson’s disease: cause shaking and stiffening of the limbs. Epilepsy: signals in the brain do not send messages in the normal way. This can lead to seizures and loss of control of the muscles.

21 Yep more problems... Viruses: may cause damage to the brain. Include: polio, rabies, meningitis, encephalitis, Zika and West Nile virus. Alcohol: can destroy brain cells, impair thinking, balance, the way your body moves and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome-FAS.

22 More problems! Really?! how many more?!?!?!?!?!?!
Other drugs: can harm the part of the brain that controls breathing, heart rate, and sleep. Depending on the type of drug you can speed up or slow down the nervous system. Nervous, yet?

23 Taking care of the Nervous System
Use protective gear Eat healthy Exercise safely Avoid drugs and do not use alcohol Be smart enough to keep all your brains!
