2 Monday, March 12, 2018 Set-up your notebook the Cornell way. Starter: What is figurative language? Write 3 examples. Examples: Metaphor, Simile, Hyperbole, Personification, Idiom. Metaphor: Comparing two unlike things without using like or as. Example: Life is a roller coaster. Simile: Comparing two unlike things using like or as. Example: Our soldiers are as brave as lions. In the notes section answer the following questions: What is the main idea of this poem? (2 lines) The main idea of the poem, “A Dream Deferred” is that a dream is postponed or never acted on can cause a terrible pain or sadness. 2) What are the similarities between the two poems? (3 lines) The similarities between both Langston Hughes poems are that they warn us of the consequences of not following our dreams. They compare negative images to convey what can happen to the dream if we do not act upon them or strive for them. DLO: Students will be able to pick out examples of figurative language from a poem
