2. What is the H.E.R.O. Program
The H.E.R.O. Program is: simple, Researched Based, and comprehensive.
The program provides the tools needed to teach students how to be as safe as possible even in the event of an active shooting or violent event:
Teacher curriculum with interactive, non-threatening lesson plans
Learning resources for home and school
Online teacher education employing the best-practices of safety science.
Safe Kids H.E.R.O. School designation
Access to library of field studies and publications.

3. H.E.R.O. Program for Educators
The H.E.R.O. Program blends the sciences of protection and education. Based on best- practices, the instructional methodology includes journals, compare-contrast, narrative, application, and problem solving. Common Core Standards and 21st century critical thinking concepts are incorporated in a multidisciplinary/cross curricular design, making the curriculum adaptable for any classroom environment.

4. Why be a H.E.R.O.?
The H.E.R.O. Program is designed to teach students how to respond to life-threatening events with simple, easy-to-remember and effective strategies. The H.E.R.O. Program gives students the confidence to respond to any kind of danger, whether in school or at home. The H.E.R.O. Program teaches students to overcome situations by empowering them and instilling confidence in their own decision-making abilities.

5. HIDE – ESCAPE – RUN - OVERCOME
Students and teachers are taught to HIDE from intruders and barricade their classroom.
Students and teachers are taught to ESCAPE from their classroom in the event a violent intruder attempts to force their way inside.
Students and teachers are taught to RUN away from a violent intruder. While this may sound simple, many people find themselves frozen during violent intruder events. Something as simple as running from an intruder MUST be learned, discussed, and practiced.
Strategies that teach students to defend themselves only as a LAST RESORT are carefully addressed in the curriculum.

6. HIDE Yell HIDE – HIDE – HIDE Lock all doors and windows
Lights off – blinds closed
Barricade – put something in front of the door – think what can you use in your class to barricade – to slow the bad guys down
60% of intruders are known by students and adults
Inside the classroom – don’t be in the slice of pie –the area most likely to be hit by an intruder. Be in the corners – or closest to the door – behind the door – create your own barriers – stack chairs and or desks

7. ESCAPE Yell ESACPE – ESCAPE - ESCAPE
Escape – know when to leave in a violent event – when danger increases time to leave
In the classroom – know another way to get out – windows – backdoor
Look before you go – move quickly – not together – find a safe place to go
Scatter – intruder has a hard time focusing – create chaos - scatter

8. RUN
Yell RUN – RUN – RUN
Run in a different way – not in a straight line
Call 911
Hide – run again if necessary

9. OVERCOME Yell OVERCOME – OVERCOME – OVERCOME
Last chance presented with danger – must do something – follow flight response
Throw things to repel the intruder
What do we have in our classrooms that can be used: backpacks, staples, pencils/pens, fire extinguisher
We are the real heroes until police arrive
