1 Chapter 15 - Module Drafting
Gwen A. Little CEP Powerpoint Presentation 10/14/98

2 Every module includes an objective skill check description
description of relevance, practice and feedback

3 Drafting a module Depends on how instruction will be delivered
Examples Use audiotape - write a script In print write so student can read By computer -draft individual screens By teacher do a lesson plan

4 Module Floor Plan - P. 162 Big Picture - show students where they are in larger scheme of things (Always included) Objective - show objectives to accomplish in terms student can understand (Always included) Skill check description - describe what students must do to demonstrate mastery of objective Relevance - explain and/or demonstrates why accomplishment of objective important to students (Always included) Demonstration - show what students will look like when performing objective (As needed) Instruction - teach students what they need to know before they practice the objective (As needed)

5 Floor Plan cont’d. Practice/Feedback - provide practice in objective along with information about performance and progress (Always included) Self-check - give student a way to check whether they’re ready to demonstrate their ability to perform as objective requires (As needed)

6 Please note…. Floor plans are not media specific
can be followed no matter who or what presents the instruction Different lessons will have different floor plans because different objectives need different module components to accomplish them

7 Using Existing Material
Don’t reinvent the wheel Use existing material but only the parts that are important to accomplish objectives Example - Textbook -seldom need entire text, portion of text will usually be used in a sequence other than one in which it is written

8 How to Draft a Module Review items on practice description along with module objective Locate existing instructional material, compare with objectives of module that they are intended for Write objective as it will be presented to the students Write practice feedback section say where can get practice equipment tell them what to do with equipment tell how to evaluate practice performance

9 How to cont’d. Write a description that will show why it’s important to the student to develop the competence describe by the objectives If you need to instruct before students will be ready to practice and if presenting instruction mainly by lecture, draft a lesson plan Include directions that will tell students what to do make sure that the module directs the student to the instructional sources and to the practice Write what students should do to demonstrate their achievement of the objective

10 The Lesson Plan Prescribe key events that should occur during the module Tells activities the instructor and student may engage in to reach objectives of course Equipment and Material List a ready checklist that will be needed for completing the lesson

11 Implementation Instructions
Why are they important Instruction would sit there and gather dust misuse - may cause damage to self or others Instruction needs to be accompanied by whatever directions/instructions that will allow others to follow the same implementation steps that you do

12 To make sure your instruction works
Teach things not known Provide instructions needed to get students ready to practice objectives Provide practice and feedback Take steps to find out whether the student can perform as desired
